Everyone should have dignity at work. Shame on you Birmingham University!!

University is spending money for luxurious editions of leaflets. and all kind of papers but need to pay for hiring staff.

Two tier employment in practice.
1 May 2019
All workers should be in-house: outsourcing to degrade working conditions and bypass workers’ rights and representation is wrong.

Dreadful
30 Apr 2019
I work at the Edgbaston Park Hotel as a receptionist, I work day/night shifts, one of my colleagues who is on university pay got paid significantly more than me, and we almost work the same hours, we should all be under the contract of the university, the wage I am on now doesn’t match up to the wage and perks that are on the university of Birmingham contract.
29 Apr 2019
As a postgraduate student at the University it is really sad to see services outsourced in the name of profit. Support staff are vital to the university and they should all receive the same pay scale and benefits.
24 Apr 2019
This is my alma mater and this miserliness brings shame on my good name.
23 Apr 2019
I’m shocked at the anti union tactics, the abuse & evasion of employment rights & I have been encouraging my son to apply to Uni of Birmingham (because I studied in Birmingham as a student & loved the city & its people) but I am seriously thinking of dissuading him from going to the uni if this is how they treat their staff. Its disgraceful.
18 Apr 2019
At SOAS we have shown that this can be done and that outsourced workers can and must be treated with equality, dignity and respect. Solidarity from SOAS UNISON branch!
18 Apr 2019
This is immoral. As an alumni of the university, I’m deeply disappointed in this behaviour.
16 Apr 2019
It would seem businesses are reverting back to the ‘dark days’ of the Victorian work houses and they need to get their act together and bring their business ethics into the 21st century. To abuse and mistreat employees in this chronically shameful and disgraceful manner is an outrage! This hotel needs to be brought under the umbrella of the University of Birmingham, so the staff receive the same terms and conditions of employment as everyone else who works at the University. Not to do so, would be simply colluding with the perpetrators of these appalling, abusive work practices. I can only hope, trust, urge and implore David Eastwood and Richard Metcalfe to act with the integrity these, hard working, employees deserve.
16 Apr 2019
Worker should be treated better proper pay rises.
16 Apr 2019
My predecessors fought hard to get what I’ve got: a decent wage and somewhere to live; a union to protect me. Leave it to David Eastwood and his cohorts and I’ll be living where my ancestors lived: in a slum and on the breadline.
15 Apr 2019
A fair day’s work demands a fair day’s pay
15 Apr 2019
My university colleagues shoukd be treated the same as the rest of us. Who will be outsourced next?
15 Apr 2019
I’m signing because outsourcing deteriorates our members terms and conditions. Fact.
15 Apr 2019
Because universities shouldn’t treat people like this. It’s unethical and immoral.
15 Apr 2019
Our University should be a world-leader in fair employment as well as research
15 Apr 2019
This is an appalling example of inequality- UoB bring all your staff UP to the same pay and working conditions! Solidarity with all fighting for equality!

Cutting the pay and conditions of the lowest paid staff is the sign of a morally bankrupt organisation

The obsession of out sourcing, when will it stop? We a becoming a nation of cheap labour & slaves
2 years ago
Jobs need to be given to local people rather than turfed out to contractors who then will not offer benefits, nor will the University have to be stuck with the cost of employee benefits.
“The University’s only justification so far for the change has been that they want to pay managers bonuses which aren’t allowed under University rules.” management getting bonuses….? If it does get pushed through will you be giving the transferred staff equivalent bonuses???

As an educator, I see the slippery slope of outsourcing.

This represents the worse sort of faux corporate shenanigans. Valued university staff are not assets to be shuffled around, staff and student *are* the university.
This is a blatant attempt to undermine existing employees’ rights.

TO PREVENT WORKERS LOSING THEIR RIGHTS AS UOB EMPLOYEES AND BEING OUTSOURCES ON ZERO CONTRACTS.

We can’t have a race to the bottom. Fair play for all.

Workers should *all* have trade union rights.

I’m signing because university staff have a right to take full part in decisions affecting their future, not to have it dictated to them by university management.
The neoliberal outsourcing madness continues, despite the Carillion collapse. Our esteemed leaders have learnt nothing it seems.
This is one of the worst examples of privatisation of higher education and its resources that UoB has been guilty of.
I don’t want other universities to follow this example of cutting pay for workers. It affects us all.
Outsourcing disadvantages hard working people who are already on low pay
2 years ago
I trust the judgement of people who know more than me about the situation and outsourcing means worse pay and conditions for workers.
Supcontracting leads to worse services at a greater cost with no rights for dedicated workers.

Proper staff conditions are important, bonuses to managers are not!

Staff conditions will deteriorate through outsourcing – oppose it!

Outsourcing is crippling this country and its people. It’s a disgrace and neo liberal greed has to stop.
Outsourcing of key workers is a back door way of cutting pay and conditions.
It will not be for the better but for the worse!! Unhappy staff mean unhappy work!
As an alumna and former employee of the UoB I am appalled at the ongoing outrageous behaviour of the management.

What happens to the pay and conditions of outsourced workers?…
I am against workers losing their protections and reducing their pay, as outsourcing has shown it is the private companies making profit at the cost of ordinary workers
Familiar story, those on the lowest salaries suffer, while senior management keep their terms and conditions. When will the pay cuts stop.
education not for sale!
I’m signing because this is an attack on workers’ terms and conditions which must be resisted. Outsourcing has failed across the public sector.
Services should be keeped in-house to protect T&Cs also protect jobs , when services are outsourced the employees lose out on wages
I have concerns surrounding outsourcing birmingham unviversity staff experiencing tupid this being set as a president. impacting other services
2 years ago
I’m signing because univerisites selling off profitable assets to private companies makes no sense. It would likely lead to an increase in prices of the services provided and in the long term is a poor financial decision.
The dedicated staff are the University’s greatest asset. You need to retain them, develop them and recognise that they are an integral part of the University’s success. Outsource the incompetent managers not the hard working frontline staff!
Once the Univesity gets the taste for outsourcing it’s a slippery slope! Before you no it, all of the catering department will be working for separate company, on less money and poor t&c’s.
Your intentions to reduce workers terms and conditions you should be ashamed of yourself.

Please sign and share! We need your support to stop the university management from pursuing their plans to outsource university staff. How can you go to university when there’s staff being cleansed? So please please sign and share. Let’s save Birmingham University and their staff!!

Let’s keep the standards for our university high – staff maintain contractual terms, seniority, pension, etc. and instead of being made ‘redundant’ are promoted to new positions (again with same contractual terms, seniority, and benefits). Why would we lower our standards to level of some corporate predators? This is a community.
Our students who are payting very substantial fees deserve to be served by a well motivated and respected workforce – with proper terms and conditions!
This is totally disgraceful. It has to stop it is about time that the University and others respect the work that people do and not weaken people pay and terms and conditions.
I support the workers who were employed as University staff and wish to stay as such.

Outsourcing destroys public service
I don’t pay £9000 a year to see my university, which I love, make life harder for its incredible staff. There is plenty enough money to pay *all* staff fairly, and everyone should be entitled to holiday, sick pay etc. People up top need to stop being greedy.
It’s about time we stopped sacrificing workers’ pay and conditions to make rich people richer.
The people at the top want to cut costs so they can pay themselves more
‘If the workers are organized, all they have to do is to put their hands in their pockets and they have got the capitalist class whipped.’ Big Bill Haywood, Born: 4 February 1869, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The General Strike – Summary of a speech made in New York City on March 16, 1911 by the IWW organizer.
Restructures are being used as a cover for cuts to staff pay and conditions. As a public employer, the University of Birmingham could and should be better than this.
If it’s a wholly owned University entity then the people who work there should work for the university so that they have the same pay and conditions. It’s a basic issue of treating all employees decently and equally.
Marketisation of services is not a benign act – obfuscation of accountability and marketisation of services does not belong in any University.
I’m signing this because I think it is an outrageous and underhand trick to pretend these staff are not loyal UoB employees, and use the wrapper of a supposedly independent company to erode their rights. First here… where next?
Education is for the enrichment of people both intellectually and spiritually – it is not a market commodity. End the marketisation of Education.

Birmingham university will be taken back under public control and made part of a National Education Service. That is what Corbyn’s Labour Party is saying.
Scrap all privatisation schemes – keep the profiteers hands off our public services!
The University does not value it’s staff. None of us will be safe once they start to outsource work.
This University treats it’s staff abominably. This needs to STOP!
Everyone should have decent pay & conditions. Sick pay, holiday leave, access to trade union representation should be mandatory.
Outsourcing is uneconomical in the long term and I’m appalled that the University’s only justification for the change is to increase management bonuses. Outsourcing always leads to worse pay and terms and conditions for those on the ground and as corners are cut, worse service for the customers.
As an alumnus of the University of Birmingham, maintaining decent working conditions for all staff, not just in Birmingham but in all universities, is an issue close to my heart. The quality of students’ education depends on proper working conditions for staff. The university should be a community, where undergraduates, postgraduates, academic and support staff all feel united, and all have a decent standard of living, such that everyone can focus their mental energy on what a university is for: teaching, research and studying.
ive been through this type of corruption myself,it needs stopping

I’m a teacher in Brum and cannot believe the greed of some of our larger employers. The Uni has more than enough money to stop screwing over its staff. The day I’ll begin to believe that cash is a problem at the Uni is the day the Vice Chancellor agrees to give up the expensive perks and agrees to work for a measly five-figure salary (like the rest of us in the real world). Sign this, share this and let’s say no to the further marketisation of education.

I work for the hospitality and accommodation services as a security officer. I am very concerned as to this outsourcing solutions will start taking place into our sections.

Given the failure of Carillion recently we know Outsourcing only benefits the few at the top.

Everyone deserves decent annual leave, holidays, overtime, rates of pay and sick pay. We already have a a 2 tier workforce I don’t want to work in a 3 tier workforce. This is a bully boys charter but UNISON always stand up to bullies!!5
